Missionary Spirit Team

With God all things are possible.  ~Matthew 19:26

Missionary Spirit Team grew out the Parish Transformation process.  We were reminded that by virtue of our Baptism and Confirmation we are all called to be missionaries, whether that be where we live, where we worship or where we work.  We are called to reach out, as Jesus did, to help the poor, the sick and the sinner.

St. Barbara's Missionary Spirit Team works to find service opportunities for our parishioners.  Our goal is to give all parishioners an opportunity every month to serve someone in need.  We look for opportunities to serve those in our parish, our local community and beyond.  We have helped the hungry and the ill; our parish and our environment; children and the elderly.

Ongoing Ways to Help

Book Drive for Children’s Hospital

It can be so simple to help a sick child.  We had our first book drive in July 2017 to collect new books that were donated to Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn for children to enjoy during their hospital stay.  We will continue collecting books and take them to the hospital throughout the year.  Books need to be new to protect the health of these ill children.  You can donate a book for a child of any age, but the hospital especially appreciates board books for parents to read to their babies in the neonatal ICU, teen books and any books in Spanish.  Books may be dropped off at the rectory (building just south of church) during their regular hours (Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm).  Please contact us if you have any questions - This email address is being protected from spambots. Refugee Meals

We need volunteers to prepare a meal for Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants (ICDI) for people at staying at the Marie Joseph Houses of Hospitality in Cicero. The refugees here have already gone through the detention process after being forced to leave their country (many have fled Somalia) in order to escape war, persecution or violence. Often their fear of persecution is for reasons of their race, religion, nationality or political opinion. ICDI provides these refugees food and shelter as they await future court dates or wait for work permits. Would you like to help these people in need? We are looking for volunteers to prepare a entree, side dish or dessert for 10-15 people. This will be an ongoing service project where we will be providing dinner for the shelter every second Sunday of the month. Please contact us if you can help - This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Help the Elderly with Interfaith Community Partners

By giving Interfaith Community Partners (ICP) a little of your free time you can make a big difference in the life of some of your neighbors!  With the help of ICP's volunteers, older adults living in our community maintain their independence.  ICP offers accompanied transportation, visitation, telephone reassurance and well-being checks. All transportation services are performed by trained volunteers who use their own vehicles to drive clients to appointments.  Please contact us if you have any questions - This email address is being protected from spambots. Textile Recycling

St. Barbara has hosted several textile drives over the years and Holy Guardian Angels Parish has continued the effort.  Since 2016 we have had a permanent drop-off bin in our parking lot.  This is a great opportunity to divert textile waste from landfills.  Any time you are doing some cleaning around the house and find yourself with some bags of old clothing, shoes, towels, bed linens or curtains you can donate it at the St. Barbara location textile drop box.  Instead of becoming trash, these items are re-worn, reused and recycled both here in the US and abroad. Reusable clothes are wholesaled and retailed at affordable prices.  Items that are damaged are recycled into wiping rags (like the kind used at car washes). Clothing and textiles not suitable for wiping purposes are processed back into fibers that are then remanufactured into paper, yarn, insulation, carpet padding, sound proofing, etc.

All textile items should be placed in any type of plastic bag, tied and dropped off in the green and white USAgain drop off bin in St. Barbara's parking lot (south east corner of Prairie and Windemere).   Please contact us if you have any questions: This email address is being protected from spambots. We hope there is something here that catches your attention and gets you thinking about how you can help.  More details will be posted in the bulletin as we plan events. If you'd like to get an e-mail update about service projects (this is a great idea for families with Confirmation candidates!), contact us at missionaryspirit@stbarbarabrookfield.
